can you succeed without social media?
Who would have thought your identity online could make or break your success.
The text from The Essentials of Social Media, for chapter two, explains how your identity in the media affects your professional life.
As a generation who grew up with social media, we posted whatever we wanted, when we wanted. As middle schoolers and high schoolers when we were told, "watch what you put out on the internet" we were beyond naive and did what we wanted to. At least for me, looking back I should have been a little more efficient on the selfie skills but let's hope no one ever sees those.
However, adult life has arrived, and if we're ready or not we need to realize that social media is our identity, our first impression. One wrong post, and BAM, there goes the reputation. However, if you are worried, like me, Michelle Charello explained ways how to overcome your past on the media. When creating a personal brand I didn't even think about destroying my past posts, I just thought of the future posts. However, it's not as hard as it sounds to cover up the past. Just by deleting pictures, untagging yourself from other posts, and making your accounts private, you are on track to success (Charello, 2021).
To personally succeed in life as a professional, the media is key. Meaning, if our identity is horrendous through the eyes of people that don't even know us in real life, they aren't ever going to want to meet us. If no one wants to meet you, finding a career will be impossible. We have to be cautious of what content we show the world.
We have to make sure we identify accounts as either professional or personal to create platforms for both forms of life. Not only do we have to stress about educating ourselves, finding a job, working, but now we have to look good on social media. This is so much work!!!!
In my eyes, social media is how most humans succeed, but I am also part of generation Z, so I may be biased. One bad comment or post can change the identity of a human and determine if society will keep a follow or not. We arent in the patriarch era, but social status has a lot to do with power and success today.
Honestly, I'm not completely sure if success can still be found without social media. There have been examples in the past but like I said our identity in the media is everything in this generation. So the question still remains and your thoughts are welcomed. Can you succeed without social media?
I thought it was very important how you mentioned that one post can really make or break your career down the road. One's social media account truly is someone's first impression of you and you have to make sure it is a good one. I also admit that I never truly grasped what my teachers and parents were saying when I was told to watch what I put online, but the more I grow up the more I realize how important that statement really is and how much is riding on just a simple social media post. I also liked how you brought up the question if you can succeed without social media. Social media is a huge way of life now. I am a sport management and public relations major so social media is going to be a huge part of my career. That's why I believe for me social media is needed for my success.
