Is LinkedIn mandatory for a job?

 Think about it.

LinkedIn is where you find a job, where you search for workers and how you promote your business. Having a business without LinkedIn is like being 30 and not having a Facebook. It's rare.

Businesses rely on employees to create profiles to be searched upon in a professional way. When looking for a new employee, Instagram feeds with pictures of the latest concert you went to does not exactly portray credentials for the next top job. People work hard on LinkedIn to focus on their abilities to connect with businesses and follow up on interviews. This is the make-or-break place when searching for a new job.

But is it mandatory for a job?

It's hard to say knowing that I haven't really been on LinkedIn for very long. However, after reading chapter nine I realized it's much more than just another media app. This is the platform to create a professional look for yourself. It's where people get to see your real self through academics and work qualifications. Without it, people have no idea what abilities you have to work in the real world.

I think that's why I never created an account. Life went too fast to realize I needed a professional job for my future. The neat thing is, however; is that I have time. A lot of it. LinkedIn doesn't seem to be going anywhere and creating one now will only help me for the future, not detriment it.

What I mean by that for instance is the Instagram and Snapchat could potentially hurt my professional career because of the post I released years ago. But joining a new platform and showing off my actual skills will help the fact I'm not just a girl who posts selfies and creative pictures on social media.

Honestly, from my perspective, it is mandatory to have a LinkedIn for a job. It's where the connections, iterations, identity happens after an interview. It's where a new business can see your face again without being in person. this platform is a social media platform but it's an app that allows people to see another side of you.

So before you think you don't need a LinkedIn try to think of your future and the possibilities that can occur in your professional life with one.

  1. I’ve felt the exact same way about LinkedIn. I wasn’t sure if I had to make an account, and was apprehensive about it because I don’t have many qualifications as of now. I liked how you said, making an account now wont hurt and can only help for the future!

  2. Hey Alaina, i agree with this 100%. Im currently a business management major and in one of my courses (Career Planning) we are currently setting up a LinkedIn account and learning about how helpful the platform is when it comes to finding jobs/internships for our future. I personally like the platform a lot because it's almost similar to platforms like Indeed except it helps more for networking. I truly feel like LinkedIn is the best platform for networking a job searching as well.

  3. LinkedIn is very useful in terms of other people looking at your experience, but it is also useful to remember what you’ve done in the past. As I’ve worked at more and more jobs, it gets harder to remember the specific duties for each job. LinkedIn can act as a really good repository to store your history for yourself as well. It can also be useful when applying for jobs since some jobs sites will allow you to import your LinkedIn information instead of typing it all in manually.
