the airplane drop
I have to say I might be the next pilot of the family.
Just kidding (: but I did get to fly a plane and let me tell you it was insane.
Last week my dad taught me how to fly a little 4-seater charter plane and my world was flipped upside down. The views were immaculate. Since this wasn't a commercial airline and we only reached about 4,000 feet the views were more than just some tiny color squares. I was able to see my entire hometown, everything from my old high school to where I live, the ground was clear as day.
At first, when my dad told me to take the wheel I was like hell no! But once I was taught the controlling of the wheel and placement of the footing that plane was mine. Let me tell you I was the best co-pilot out there. When I was turning the plane to the right to face the ground my stomach dropped and I had never felt so elite in my life. I got this feeling that I was on top of the world. That urge only comes once in a while and being able to experience such a sensation in the air is indescribable.
Now before you jump your seat, I was only in the passenger seat steering occasionally. Trust me I am not that skilled to take full control of that type of transportation.
I have flown commercial airlines my whole life since my dad was a pilot for United, but I've only been in a tiny 4 seater plane a couple times. Both my dad and brother are pilots, in fact, my dad learned to fly before he could drive. I mean you would think with that family history I would be a pilot by now, but I can officially tell you why being a pilot is not my me.
The amount of skill to be a pilot is beyond my capability. To fly just a little plane, you have a checklist as long as the Bible to look over before taking off. And don't even get me started with the details to pay attention to during the flight. Every second you have to give focus to the weather, the traffic, the wings, the gas, the engine and about a million other factors. The work of a pilot is painful, but I can see why my dad fell in love with flying. Taking off from the ground and seeing the world in a different view is a whole other feeling of happiness. Being on top of reality in mid-air is an indescribable feeling of being alive.
Maybe one day I will take up to courage to learn a little more about being a pilot but for now, my feet belong on the ground. However, if my dad ever offers to take me up again I wouldn't think twice about sitting next to him and enjoying the view.
So, in the future, if you ever need a ride I may be able to fly you somewhere. Just be ready for a ride of a lifetime (:
Hi Alaina. What I find funny is the fact that both your brother and father are pilots because mine are also both pilots as well. Low and behold my father also learned to fly before he learned to drive! I thought it was only my family's thing, but who would have thought. It's awesome seeing someone else experience things I have as well. I hope you get to learn more about planes and maybe one day you'll be able to fly one by yourself!
ReplyDeleteAlaina, that is such a cool story that you flew a plane, even though it was just occasionally, people don't need to know that. I'm jealous that you such so amazing fews, even the pictures that you posted were so cool!
