Is Snapchat Timeless?

Imagine using Snapchat when you're 80 years old and showing off your newest walker? Or you are taking mirror pictures with your grandkids!

Like what?

Do we really think this app with last for generations to come?

Reading through Chapter 7, I realized Snapchat has thought of everything. The way this app is responding to societal needs is insane and if the ideas continue to rise who knows where the app will be in fifty years. For instance, this app created a visual search in 2018 that allowed users to point the camera at a product and buy the product from just a click away. They also introduced snap maps, allowing users to share location, cameos giving users an opportunity to loop videos, snap games, spotlight, screenshot, live news feeds, videos and literally every other concept you could imagine.

Yes, that may be dramatic, but Snapchat has produced content that is interactive with its users that could potentially be timeless. Even though these concepts have been conducted before like Instagram creating reals and Twitter using fleets and now Snapchat using spotlight, this app has managed to put all features in one app. Users are able to stay on Snapchat and contact friends immediately, discover the latest news on E, watch stories of people's lives, shop online, play games, take pictures and the list goes on.

The generation that Snapchat directs its content to is a younger platform from 13 - 18-year-olds. This may look as if it is a bad marketing strategy, but this generation will only grow with the app. Which could possibly increase the chances of this app lasting longer than Facebook and Instagram. Even though it may be weird taking pictures in the mirror when we're 80 years old the app may still be around for our generation to experience that.

We can't look into the future so determining if Snapchat is timeless or not is a long shot. But will we still be using this app when our generation turns 80?

I guess we will have to wait and see.

  1. It is really interesting to think about the future of social media platforms like Snapchat. There are lots that fail, but for the big ones that are still around I don't see any reason they would go away. It will be very interesting to see how they adapt to an aging userbase. It is also possible that they will also focus on the younger generation and new platforms will emerge for older people. Only time will tell!
